A Certificate of Eligibility is a document from the VA that confirms to your lender that you have the necessary active-duty service or Reserve/National Guard service to qualify for a VA home loan benefit. It is not a loan approval — it simply proves you are eligible for the program.

The COE shows your "entitlement" — how much of the loan the VA will guarantee. This affects how much you can borrow without a down payment.

There are several ways to request a COE:

Having a COE means you are eligible for the VA loan program. It does not mean a lender will automatically approve your loan. The lender still needs to verify your income, credit, assets, and the property itself. The COE is simply the first step.
